Remembering Manuel R. Delgado

(December 28, 1940 – October 28, 2024)

The Delgado family is sad to announce the passing of Manuel R. Delgado on October 28, 2024, at age 83 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He attended UC Berkeley in the late 60’s and helped to establish the Ethnic Studies Department through his activism and leadership. The following biographical account was assisted by Lucha Corpi, poet and writer.

Dawny’all Heydari, a first year student in the Ethnic Studies PhD program, has just published a timely and incisive op-ed on the website Common Dreams.
 
Dawny’all writes: “While my emotions have been high surrounding the election and the genocide in Gaza, I am finding it important to take a step back and rationally assess my choices on November 5.”

In Memoriam: Jane Singh

Jane Singh, who taught courses on South Asian history, literature, and social issues in the Asian American and Asian Diaspora Studies program of Ethnic Studies between 1991 and 2016, passed away in Yuba City on August 18, 2024.

She received her PhD at Berkeley in the South Asian Languages and Literature Department. Her dissertation was titled “Echoes of Revolution: The Role of Literature in the Gadar Movement.”

Professor Shari Huhndorf has recently published her latest book! Native Lands: Culture and Gender in Indigenous Territorial Claims is just out now from the University of California Press.

The book has recently received the 2024 William Saroyan International Prize for Writing and the 2024 American Book Award!

An author-meets-critics event about Professor Juana Maria Rodriguez’s book Puta Life was recently featured in The Daily Californian.
A remarkable digital humanities project about Berkeley’s own Chicano Studies Library has just launched! It’s called Bibliopolítica: A Digital History of the Chicano Studies Library, and it features a fabulous digital exhibit, oral histories with key figures in the development of the library (including our own Lily Castillo-Speed!), and a whole range of illuminating archival items. We are excited to share that Dr. Wayne Silao Jopanda, a 2014 UC Berkeley’s Ethnic Studies undergraduate alumnus, has joined San Jose State University as an Assistant Professor in Asian American Studies.

We encourage applications from scholars that take intersectional and interdisciplinary approaches to research and teaching. The area of specialty is open to scholars of Latino Studies broadly defined.

The University of California, Berkeley invites applications for four faculty positions as a part of a cluster hiring initiative in “Asian American and Pacific Islander Transpacific Futures.” The cluster will consist of a tenure track (Assistant Professor) position in the Department of Ethnic Studies, a tenure track (Assistant Professor) position in the School of Public Health, a tenure track or tenured (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor) position in the School of Education, and a tenured (Associate or Full Professor) position in the Department of Geography.

Professor Christian Paiz’s book, The Strikers of Coachella, has received the American Historical Association-Pacific Coast Branch first book award. Congratulations, Christian!

Also, Christian was a guest on a great podcast, hosted by Cal alum and Coachella resident Fausto Figueroa, focusing on politics and mental health. The episode covers first gen experiences in college, Latinx Studies, and mental health challenges/resources. Give it a listen!

In Memoriam

Mario Barrera, Professor Emeritus of Ethnic Studies, passed away on March 29, 2024, in Ventura, California. He was one of the founders of the field of Chicano Studies whose influential writings shaped the discipline. He was our respected and beloved colleague.
