197 Community Field Study

All students in the department are required to satisfy four units of Field Study in their respective major doing community service work (paid or unpaid internship or volunteer) with organizations and programs that engage and support underrepresented communities on-campus and in the surrounding community.  The idea is that students can apply and further enrich their knowledge of the study of communities of color and the qualitative appreciation of their agency and varied productions.

The Field Study requirement consists of two parts:

ETHSTD 197A (1 unit) is offered in the fall and/or spring and all students are required to complete this seminar one time before they graduate.  Enrollment in the 197A seminar requires a concurrent on or off-campus field study placement during the same term. Please contact a major advisor for more information on enrolling in the 197A course.

Students are required to complete three units of 197 field study work for their respective major. Each unit requires a minimum of 45 hours of field study work per unit of credit (3 units = 135 hours).  Please contact a major advisor for the 197 field study form that is required before students can enroll.  197 units are also available during the summer.  Below are some examples of field study sites that previous students have used to fulfill their 197 field study requirement.
