Bio & Research Interests
Dr. Lisa Hirai Tsuchitani is a continuing lecturer in the Asian American & Asian Diaspora Studies Program of the Department of Ethnic Studies at UC Berkeley. A recipient of the Chancellor’s Public Service Award for Community Engaged Teaching in 2020 and the UC Berkeley Foundation Spirit of 1868 Award, Dr. Tsuchitani centers her research, teaching, and campus service around critical race theory, critical pedagogy, and educational equity issues. She is founder and chair of the Japanese American Studies Advisory Committee, the inaugural faculty co-chair of the Asian American & Pacific Islander Standing Committee, and the inaugural Director of Engagement for Asian American & Pacific Islander Thriving Initiatives within the Division of Equity & Inclusion.
Dr. Tsuchitani is co-author of Mountain Movers: Student Activism and the Emergence of Asian American Studies (2019), which traces the history of student movements at San Francisco State University, UC Berkeley, and UCLA during the 1960s. She also is a contributor to Japanese American Millennials: Rethinking Generation, Community, and Diversity (2019). She is honored to be teaching the very courses that inspired her as an undergraduate to pursue a career in the field of Asian American Studies.
