“Recovering Memory in Cambodia and Diaspora” Receives Luce Foundation Grant
December 10, 2022
Congratulations to Khatharya Um and her collaborator, Penny Edwards, for receiving a $60k grant from the Luce Foundation for their project “Recovering Memory in Cambodia and Diaspora: Hidden Histories, Archiving Cinema,” a collaboration between the Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center in Cambodia, CSEAS, Berkeley Art Museum, BAMPFA and UCSC. The grant will fund the creation and curation of an oral history archive and promote awareness of Cambodia’s film history. Khatharya and Boreth Ly of UCSC will co-direct the Hidden Histories project, engaging researchers at Bophana in oral history interviews with Cambodian elders, which will then be archived at our Ethnic Studies Library. Penny will direct the Archiving Cinema project, which includes short-term residencies by BAMPFA staff at Bophana and the development of bilingual resources.
