This interdisciplinary graduate seminar examines immigrant rights activism in theory and practice. Beginning with close readings of key texts in citizenship theory (e.g., by Benhabib, Honig, Boskniak, Carens, etc.), the bulk of the course will focus on analyzing case studies of immigrant rights activism in practice. Types and arenas of activism that will be covered include: immigrant mass mobilization against federal anti-immigrant legislation; queer migrant activism; immigrant family and youth activism; gender and immigrant activism; immigrant labor organizing; and immigrant religious activism. Although the seminar will focus on the United States, we will end the semester by examining examples of migrant rights activism across the globe.
