Check out the virtual catalog for the art exhibit “Latinx in California” which highlights the artwork that forms part of the Latinx Research Center’s permanent exhibition, by the same title, at the Shorb House, 2547 Channing Way. Ethnic Studies Professor Laura E. Pérez is the current Chair of the Latinx Research Center and helped produce and write this catalog which includes Latinx artistic luminaries such as Amalia Mesa-Bains, Esther Hernández, René Castro, Favianna Rodríguez, and Melanie Cervantes.

Fiat Vox: Why are there so many Filipino nurses in the U.S.?

Growing up in New York City, ethnic studies professor Catherine Ceniza Choy remembers seeing a lot of nurses dressed in their crisp white uniforms. She and her mom lived in an apartment building near several hospitals, so seeing health workers in the community wasn’t unusual.

But she also noticed that many of the nurses were Filipino.

Raymond Telles, Associate Adjunct Professor of Ethnic Studies, has received the 2019 Social Sciences Distinguished Teaching Award. Ray teaches courses in the Chicana/o/Latina/o Studies Program and the Comparative Ethnic Studies Program such as CS 135A (Latino Narrative Film to the 1980s); CS 135B, (Latino Narrative Film since the 1980s); ETH STD 122AC (Ethnicity and Race in Contemporary American Films), and ETH STD 180 (Selected Topics: Documentary Film Production). Ray is also an accomplished filmmaker. Among his recent accomplishments has been the nomination of the PBS documentary “

Uprooted: Remembering Japanese American internment in California and my family’s past

Feb. 19, 2019, the Day of Remembrance marked the 77th anniversary of the signing of Executive Order 9066 by president Franklin Delano Roosevelt. In Japanese culture, the turning of 77 is considered a special birthday — “kiju,” an age of happiness and good fortune.

But we look back on this anniversary not in happiness or fortune but in a spirit of remembrance and determination to do better.

Jeff Adachi’s passing is a terrible loss to not just the voiceless and the underrepresented, but to all those who share his vision for a more just society.  A fearless advocate for social justice, he was a proud product of Asian American Studies at UC Berkeley.

eff Adachi, the San Francisco public defender and UC Berkeley alumnus who died suddenly last Friday at age 59, is being remembered this week by the campus community-at-large for embodying Berkeley’s values and mission through his work as a tireless advocate for social justice and as an award-winning filmmaker.
