Major Requirements

The Ethnic Studies Department offers majors in the following areas: Ethnic Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicano/Latino Studies, and Native American Studies. The department also offers minor programs in each area.

All majors require four core courses:

  1. Ethnic Studies 10AC
  2. Ethnic Studies 11AC
  3. Ethnic Studies 101A
  4. Ethnic Studies 101B

Each major also requires at least 4 additional electives and 4 units of field work.

Ethnic Studies

Lower Division: One additional elective course from African American Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicano Studies, Ethnic Studies, Native American Studies, or an ethnic studies related course from another department.

Upper Division:

  1. Ethnic Studies 190 (or an approved seminar in African American Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicano Studies, or Native American Studies)
  2. Completion of three elective courses from Ethnic Studies 100, 103, 122AC, C126, 130, 135, 136, 141, N144, 147, 150, 159AC, C170, C173, 180, or 190
  3. Completion of two additional elective courses from either: African American Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicano Studies, Ethnic Studies, Native American Studies, ethnic studies related courses from other departments, or approved EAP courses. (Note: elective courses do not have to be from the same program.)
  4. Ethnic Studies 197 (4 units total)

  3. Chicano Studies 197 (4 units cumulative).
