Major and Minor Requirements

Comparative Ethnic Studies Major Requirements (Effective Fall 2016)

Lower Division (4 courses)

  • Ethnic Studies 10AC
  • Ethnic Studies 11AC
  • Completion of TWO additional elective course from either: African American Studies, Asian American and Asian Diaspora Studies, Chicano Studies, Ethnic Studies, Gender and Women’s Studies, Native American Studies, or an ethnic studies related course from another department (i.e., English, Geography, Sociology)

Upper Division (8 courses)

  • Ethnic Studies 101A & 101B
  • Ethnic Studies 190 (or an approved research-based seminar in African American Studies, Asian American and Asian Diaspora Studies, Chicano Studies, Gender & Women’s Studies, or Native American Studies)
  • Completion of two elective courses from Ethnic Studies 100, 103, 122AC, C126, 130, 135, 136, 141, 144AC, 147AC, 150, 159AC, 173AC, 174, 175, 176, 180, N180, 181AC, 182AC, 190, or 190AC
  • Completion of two additional elective courses from either: African American Studies, Asian American and Asian Diaspora Studies, Chicano Studies, Ethnic Studies, Gender and Women’s Studies, Native American Studies, ethnic studies related courses from other departments, or approved EAP courses. (Note: elective courses do not have to be from the same program/department)
  • Ethnic Studies 197 (4 units total)

Honors Program

The Department of Ethnic Studies provides a program leading to the B.A. degree with honors. Students will be recommended for honors if they have completed at least 30 units and two semesters with an average GPA of at least 3.5 overall and for all work undertaken in the Department of Ethnic Studies. Students must also have been approved specifically for honors by the department chair upon recommendation by the faculty advisor for the group major. Honors students will be required to complete Ethnic Studies H196A-B, Senior Honors Seminar for Ethnic Studies Majors. In order to graduate with an B.A. degree with honors, students must obtain at least a 3.5 GPA for all course work undertaken at the University.

Asian American and Asian Diaspora Studies Major Requirements

Lower Division (4 courses)

  • Asian American Studies 20A
  • Asian American Studies 20B or 20C
  • Two courses from the following: Ethnic Studies 10AC, 11AC, 20AC, 21AC or 41AC

Upper Division (8 courses)

  • Asian American Studies 131
  • Ethnic Studies 101A or Ethnic Studies 101B
  • Asian American Studies 197 (4 units total)
  • Completion of one course from each group below:
    • Group 1 (History): 121, 122, 123, 124, 126, 127, 128AC
    • Group 2 (Community Studies): 125, 132AC, 141, 143, 144, 145AC, 146,150, 151, 165
    • Group 3 (Cultural Studies): 138, 171, 172, 173, 175, 176, 177, 178, 180, 181, 183
  • Two additional electives that can be satisfied with related courses from outside departments (i.e., Asian Studies, East Asian Languages & Cultures, History, South & Southeast Asian Studies), Asian language courses, EAP courses from an Asian university, or related coursework from other UC Campuses

Honors

The Asian American and Asian Diaspora Studies Program will provide a program leading to the B.A. degree with honors. A student will be recommended for honors if the student has completed at least 30 units and two semesters with a grade-point average of at least 3.5 overall and for all work undertaken in the Asian American and Asian Diaspora Studies Program. Students must also have been approved specifically for honors by the Ethnic Studies Department chair and the Asian American and Asian Diaspora Studies Vice Chair upon the recommendation by the faculty adviser for the major. The honors student will be required to complete H195A-B Senior Honors Seminar for Asian American and Asian Diaspora Studies Majors. In order to graduate with a B.A. degree with honors, a student must obtain at least 3.5 GPA for all course work undertaken at the university.

Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies Major Requirements

Lower Division (4 courses):

  • Ethnic Studies 10AC
  • Ethnic Studies 11AC
  • Completion of two additional elective courses from Chicano Studies 20, 40, 50, or 70

Upper Division (8 courses):

  • Ethnic Studies 101A & 101B
  • Ethnic Studies 103
  • Completion of four elective courses from Chicano Studies 110, 130, 133, 135A, 135B, 135C, 141, 142, 143, 148, 149, 150A, 150B, 152, 159, 161, 163, 165, 172, 174, 176, 179, 180, 180AC, or an approved course from another department
  • Chicano Studies 197 (4 units total)

Honors Program

The Chicano Studies program provides an option leading to the B.A. degree with honors. Students must have senior standing; a 3.5 University GPA; and a 3.5 GPA in the major. The honors thesis consists of a 6-unit research project (Chicano Studies H195A & H195B). The faculty will establish criteria and grade the project. Native American Studies Major Requirements

Honors Program

The Native American Studies Program provides a program leading to the B.A. degree with honors. A student must have senior standing; a 3.5 GPA overall; and 3.5 GPA in the major. To complete the degree with honors the student will be required to undertake a 6-unit research project (NATAMST H195A & H195B) and will be graded according to standards determined by the faculty advisor as being of honors quality.
