Employment Opportunities with the Department of Ethnic Studies

Native American Studies Faculty Position

Pending budgetary approval, the Native American Studies Program within the Ethnic Studies Department at the University of California, Berkeley, seeks applicants for a fulltime, tenure-track position at the assistant professor rank (job no. 1249).  Geographic and substantive specializations are open, but the successful candidate must focus on Native North America.  This hire will play a central role in the Program’s and the Department’s undergraduate and graduate missions, and will help shape the curricular and intellectual evolution of both the NAS Program and the Ethnic Studies Department.  We seek a scholar with a broad and open-ended vision of NAS who engages theory at-large.  The goal of our program is to bring Native American cases and materials into larger theoretical and substantive discussions in Ethnic Studies, American Studies, or disciplinary fields, and in turn to draw on theory and method from beyond NAS in order to approach NAS in new ways and to ask new questions.  The successful candidate will contribute to and thrive in larger dialogues in Ethnic Studies and other disciplinary and interdisciplinary fields of social and cultural study, enriching both NAS and the larger Berkeley and national dialogues in the process.  The annual course load includes three undergraduate courses in NAS and one graduate course in Ethnic Studies for PhD students, only some of whom will conduct research on Native topics.  PhD required by the time of appointment.  Publications and teaching experience preferred.  Applications are due by October 15, 2007, for a start date of July 1, 2008.  Candidates should send letter of application, one writing sample or publication, and three letters of recommendation to:
