GSI/GSR Positions

In order to have a better understanding of Graduate Student Instructor and/or Researcher positions, please be sure to first check the Academic Appointments Frequently Asked Questions page administered by the Graduate Division. You may also wish to thoroughly review the Appointments Office web site as they provide many valuable links for continuing students who are already working in these positions or would like to.

Jobs in Ethnic Studies

Please note that each semester, the department hires approximately 25-30 GSIs, excluding summers.  In summer, only approximately 6 jobs are available.  We do not always have enough positions for non-Ethnic Studies Ph.D. students, however, you are always encouraged to inquire about possible opportunities in the department via email to: fcazares@berkeley.edu.  Please send a copy of your most recent CV at your earliest convenience.

Current Ethnic Studies students may apply for fall jobs beginning April, and for spring jobs beginning in October. Summer jobs are filled March thru May depending on need.  We normally begin to place non-Ethnic Studies students in jobs only after we have finalized appointments for our own students since our department is required to fund a large number of our current students via these types of assistantships.

Early Promotion

Lastly, please note that students with prior teaching experience in recognized undergraduate institutions may be allowed to petition for an early promotion.  If you believe you may qualify, then please do not hesitate to contact the student services advisor in your hiring department as they must initiate the process.  In Ethnic Studies, the person to talk to is Francisca Cázares (fcazares@berkeley.edu).
